| This is the famous lava rock that we started making bonsai soil with since 1998, when most people never heard of using this for bonsai. We use it in our soil and screen it for the fines to use as topping. The size is about 1/4 inch and smaller. Great to mix into whatever formula you use to make bonsai soil with. Crushed lava rock by nature has the ability to hold water inside itself because of all the little craters in it. Some say it has some types of mineralization that is good for bonsai. In the soil the roots tend to hold onto it if you pull out a bonsai from the pot. This says that the bonsai roots derive some sort of benefit from the contact with the lava rock.
